Watching “Romeo + Juliet” did not enhance my understanding of the play. In fact, Baz Luhrman’s attempt to modernize the sets, costumes and props made it a little more difficult for me to understand. Personally, I had trouble accepting the modern context and I found that I spent a lot of time trying to figure out what was going on in context of the movie vs. the play than actually going along with things.

It was difficult for me to accept the archaic speech with a modern setting and costumes; it just did not seem to fit for some reason. I think it was a noble attempt, but overly “Hollywood” too dramatic. The directing seemed to focus more on the modernization than the intent of the story. Personally, I did not much like it.
