Rantings of a Queer Pagan

Tavish and I have gotten engaged!

Date: May 31, 2005
Time: 17:00 MST
Place: Mom & Dads

Story: I show up at My parents place, completely overwhelmed with emotion, not crying, but almost shocked. I saw my mom in the hall way and said "Mom, I need to talk to you."

"Okay" she said.

"I think you should sit down, it's pretty serious." She didn't say anything, but got this look on her face like "What the f*** did you do now?" She went into the kitchen, got her cigarettes and sat down on the couch next to me.

"You wanted to talk." she said.

"Yeah, it's quite serious." She took a deep breath. I reached into my pocket and grabbed a purple ring box with an embossed BM. I handed it to her. She looked at it.

Silence.

"Oh, it's good serious!"

"Yeah, I never said it was bad, I said it was serious."

"Well, when did you decide to do this?"

"About half an hour ago, I came straight over from the mall, I've been shopping for four hours."

"Oh."

"Yeah, I just kind of decided to do it."

"So, how are you going to propose?"

"Dunno."

"When were you thinking of doing it?"

"Dunno."

"Would you like to do it in private?"

"Nuh-uh."

"Would you like to do it in public?"

"Nuh-uh."

"Would you like to do it in front of family and friends?"

"Sure!"

"Would you like to do it here?"

"Yeah!"

"When would you like to do it?"

"Dunno."

"You're not going to be able to keep this a secret are you? That's why you came here. Would you like to do it tonight?"

"Okay!"

"Would you like to call people and invite them over?"

"Nuh-uh"

"Would you like me to do it for you?"

"Okay!"

"Get me the phone."

"I'm scared ma. I need a hug." I cuddled with her a bit. "I've never done anything like this before, nothing so serious, so big, so permanent."

"It's a huge commitment. Are you ready for it?"

"I don't know."

"Is he the one?"

"I think so."

"Can you imagine life without him. Can you imagine getting over him?"

"No."

"Sounds like you know then."

"Why don't you go get some flowers. I'll set it up."

(The last part of the conversation might have happened with my mom, or someone else, I can't remember, it's all a blur.)

So, my Cousin and I went to my florist and got some flowers, they were so excited for me (they're friends of Dorthy too.) Then I went and got the groom bear you see in the photo.

We came back to my parents place and people were still showing up. Mom told Tavish that a family meeting had been called and he needed to be there, along with my brother and his girlfriend. They idea was that they wanted to pressure me to go back to school and give up my business. I knew Tavish wouldn't go for it because things were going really good and I was keeping very busy.

When Tavish arrived, I, and all our guests were stashed in my parent's room as the family meeting began. After a bit I came out in my suit, people pouring out behind me. I asked Tavish to stand up and I got on my knees, pulled the teddy bear out of my pocket and gave it to him. He didn't notice the ring he was so shocked so I pulled it off the bear and slipped it partway on his finger.

I looked up to him and said: "Tavish, when we first met we promised that we'd be classmates in this life, and that all we would ever promise each other is that we would love each other for today, and let tomorrow take care of itself. Well, now I'm asking to change that. Will you promise to love me for tomorrow as well, will you marry me?"

"Yes I will." he said. I got up and hugged him and kissed him. We got congratulations from all and had some champagne. It was a wonderful night. :)

ps. When I first came out and got down on his knees, he started screaming "I knew it! I knew it! I knew it." He's so adorable.
